Rebecca smirked and looked at the back of Demon's head.
"Ya gonna let that go?"
Demon huffed and picked up speed, not even bothering to stay in step with Morgenstern, choosing to fly right passed. Rebecca shoved her hat down and leaned over the black's flying gold mane. |

Though both mounts were picking up speed, Morgenstern had not bothered stepping beside Demon for several moments. Very suddenly, though, Morgenstern leaped three times, clearing three times the distance separating them originally, putting Demon behind again. Morgenstern still picked up speed, leaves, wood and dirt springing up violently with each monster step. _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

It took a her mind some moments to process what she had just seen. She could feel the same thing going on in Demon's mind before the stallion just got annoyed. She hurriedly took off her hat and looped the leather tie around her arm. Chances of replacing a cowboy hat in Amber were slim to none by her reckoning. Just in time too, as Demon stretched out his body and his strides as he picked up his speed.
Which one of 'em wants the dick swingin' contest, ya reckon?
Laying low over his sleek, muscled form, Rebecca grinned.
My money's on Julian. Ain't no fillies around for Morgenstern ta impress.
She felt his amusement in her mind as shifted slightly so her face was more on the outside to avoid the debris Morgenstern's monstrous hooves churned up in his wake on the inside track. Her dark hair mingled with the gold of Demon's mane as it streamed out behind them. Adrenaline pumping through horse and rider, laughter bubbled up unbidden in Rebecca. The outcome of the race not nearly as important as the sheer freedom and joy of the ride |

Julian took them through parts of the forest that were easier on the horses and riders, with trees further apart, clearings here and there, and the land slightly sloped upward.
Demon and Rebecca caught up enough to see Julian smiling from the corners of his mouth. Rebecca sensed Morgenstern's mind focused on the race and pushing his own limits for speed. There was room for him to increase his speed, the only thing truly stopping him from clearing a trail for Demon to follow was the fact that he enjoyed being chased by Demon. Not many horses could keep up.
Morgenstern moved like a well-oiled machine, unstoppable. A trackless train, impossibly increasing in speed. Rebecca also had the impression that if something somehow got in the way, Morgenstern would continue through, determination and force cutting through the physical, arcane and metaphysical barriers of Shadow. _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

One of the joys of having a truly intelligent horse, was not having to watch where they were going; Demon was perfectly capable of making sure they didn't head into anything he couldn't handle. Demon enjoyed a good run as much as anyone, so it was only a matter of time before he stopped caring about who was swinging what and just enjoyed himself. He'd been concerned if he would be able to in this new place with no wide open plains that stretched for days under endless skies.
The wind stole her breath, but Rebecca's grin was wide. So her hair was going to be a nest when this was done; she never cared much about that and besides - that's what hats were for.
She watched the horse and rider ahead of her. The way Morgenstern's muscles bunched and stretched under the gray's hide was a thing of beauty. As was the way man and beast seemed to meld and flow. It only served to make her want to ride him even more. She wished Julian wasn't wearing that armor though. Watching a well made man ride a horse was one of her great pleasures in life. |

After riding ahead for some time, Julian and Morgenstern slow down and Julian yells, "I don't think I'll ever truly find out how fast Morgenstern can go... But you get the idea, I'm sure."
...
Julian continues to slow down Morgenstern to maintain a fast paced chase without it being a race, and considering the horses and riders involved, turns out to be much faster than others could handle.
The forest is lovely, and massive trees take root deep into rock and earth, while shrubs, tall, sharp ferns and tree sprouts grow densely everywhere else. The light continues to filter through the canopies of upper foliage while the pollen in the air makes everything misty and golden.
Arden continues to grow denser and uneven and Julian yells out a warning, "Cliff ahead." He does not slow Morgenstern but veers right abruptly at a high speed. It surprises Rebecca to see a massive horse spring thusly, but that is one of the many things that make Morgenstern a horse of Legend. _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

Demon took the turn at speed, kicking up sod and detritus when his hooves dug in to avoid the skid. Rebecca leaned into the turn easily. They herded wild horses and longhorn steer through the mountains. These actions were familiar - and fun judging by the grin on Rebecca's face.
Now that they weren't screaming through the forest, Rebecca returned her hat to her head and settled it firmly into place. She actually looked at her surroundings. It was unlike any forest she had ever seen, and even Eric's vivid way with words hadn't done it justice. |
