Finn wipes a hand over his face, and takes a deep breath. "Faylinn, have you magic enough to crack the earth and cut the City off from the surroundings?" He turns and makes their angle of approach more oblique. "I think your friends are coming out to play. We need to lead them away." He looks to Kade to be sure he's keeping up. "We won't be going into the City for the moment."

"Undoubtedly," Faylinn agrees with a sigh. "That is why I did not want to drop the connection earlier. If you were wondering, I just did; I was not interested in the headache they seemed intent on giving me." She looks towards the city thoughtfully. "I will take a look, but I honestly do not anticipate success. There is not much to work with here."

She reaches out, trying to judge whether she'd be able to create an appropriate chasm.

Faylinn checks on what she already knew. The sorcery here is very unlikely to occur at all, even in the natural form of an earthquake or even a storm. Pattern itself would be much more likely. But more work with the Pattern is also likely to affect whatever defenses Eric put up on Cimarron, changing its nature and perhaps allowing access to the Black Road in this land, from what she understands of the power of the Jewel of Judgment.

She can feel the signal trying to reach her again. It feels similar to trump, but it can be easily blocked. Expanding her mind through the use of sorcerous energies could also make her vulnerable to contact.

The lights continue to move forward, toward the lot of them, and the Lone Pine Ranch by default.

Faylinn frowns and mutters something that sounds suspiciously like a curse - something she rarely does. "Well, there is good news and there is bad news," she says flatly. "The bad news is that I am unlikely to be able to create anything that would open a chasm or cause enough of a storm to be able to derail them for the time being. The secondary bad news is that while Pattern is likely to be able to do it, it is also likely to disrupt the protections Eric put in place. That may or may not allow the Black Road to enter. Also, these beings are persistent and would like to resume contact through the psychic field in addition to coming to find us."

Finn's eyebrows rise at his sister's curse, and decides it is time to ready his weapons. He eyes the approaching lights, not liking at all what they mean for the group or for the ranch. His expression becomes grim. "Your good news is lacking, Sister." He states clearly, "I had that suspicion about too much Pattern use. That is likely why the medicine took the form that it did." He holsters his pistol, satisfied that it is fully loaded and keeps his rifle in hand. "We ride for those lights. We strike at them, and make them chase us. Ready your weapons, and stay close. We flee ahead of them and dash into a Hellride."

He glances at the others, "It's the best we can do."

Kade nods to Finn, brings Sha'lee closer and checks his guns. "If one of us were to fall, what is the procedure to follow? Keep running or run the risk of being caught to rescue the unfortunate?"

Faylinn smiles, very thinly. "The good news, dear brother, is that we are under no particular obligation to stay. May I offer another option? It is possible that I may be able to act as a beacon, if I tune back into this field. If we ride obliquely towards the city, perhaps we will achieve the same effect as an assault and draw."

Finn smiles tightly, the expression lacking in humor as he answers Arkadios. "Do not worry. If you fall, I will not leave you behind." He shakes his head, "No one gets left behind."

He turns back to Faylinn, "Do what you must, but if you begin to act strangely -- I will knock you out. Do not be angry when you wake up." He nods, "Tell me you're ready. Call out when you know you have their attention."

When he gets the acknowledgment, he leads them straight towards the lights for a time, and then cuts at an angle to the right. "Wait to press the horses until we need the speed! I want them to be on out trail before I shift us out of here!"

"I suggest you arrange for some aspirin, as well," Faylinn answers Finn with a sigh. "I am bound to have a headache after this, whether you are forced to knock me out or not. Traveller," she pats the stallion's neck, "I need you to be sure you stay with Blake. I may not be able to pay attention to where we are going."

With that, she steels herself and her defenses, and opens herself to the communication again. She presents as bold a presence as she can and snaps, ~That was hardly polite.~

"An entire bottle of aspirin, Finn," Faylinn growls, "as they are now shouting at me. They are apparently distantly connected with the Black Road, as they know who the Protector is. And they wish a fight. I am going to taunt them; now would be a good time to run."

Finn, impossibly, appears even more grim than he has before. "The Protector? They've heard of Ojirasan?" He considers the options, wondering how these things could have heard of Benedict. Then it occurs to him; The Black Road need not manifest only as a Road. It crossed the infinite Shadow, infinite in variety, why should the Black Road be bound to a single form of manifestation. He turns to regard the lights, and beats down a strong urge to fight the things, and then clenches his jaw. "Ride! Kade you better stay wit her! Fay, keep drawing them. Blake is the fastest here, I'll show them my tail and catch up! Go! Go! Keep drawing them on!"

Kade complies without a comment, if needed he helps Faylinn to mount then mounts up himself, once they are moving Kade positions himself near to Faylinn, to her right and slightly to the rear so that he had his right hand free and also has a clear view of Faylinn.
