Ian regains consciousness in his own chambers, in castle Amber, dawn's strong light filtering through light brown curtains.

For a long groggy moment, it seems to him that the events that occurred since he last awoke in this room were all but just a wild dream.

Then the pain kicks in and reality resumes. There is someone in his room with him and it isn't Flora. Ian's vision becomes a bit clearer and he sees a young woman sitting near to him, reading a book. She looks vaguely familiar and Ian recalls having seen her speak cordially with Flora on many occasions. He does not recall her name.

She does not seem to have noticed his regaining consciousness.

"I could think of a variety of witty things to say right now. Actually, I can't. How is Ulnanuit?"

The young lady is startled by Ian and drops her book. She immediately approaches him and quietly says, "She's fine, Lord Ian! She is staying in Lady Florimel's room currently."

She turns around quickly and brings him a tall glass of water. Ian feels considerably well, though he isn't sure exactly how long he has been out. He feels the bandages where he has been cut. His wounds sting, but he feels well enough to move through the pain. Though he feels a bit light headed he suspects this will pass quickly too.

"Um...I don't want to impose upon you however..."

Ian counts things off on his fingers.

"One. I'm starving. Please arrange to have breakfast sent to me. Two. I need some paper and a pencil or a pen so I can sketch some of the things I saw recently. Three."

Ian glances and sees Hollowshade lying there, like its sleeping against the furniture.

"Okay, I have three."

He thinks for a second.

"Do you know my medical condition? If not, I need to speak to who does to know how badly I'm hurt. Four, five and six would be I'd like to speak to Flora, Eric and my sister April, in that order."

He smiles at her.

"Got all that?"

He laughs until it hurts.

"Sorry I startled you."

She nods after he confirms each item to her. She is extremely attentive to his every word, clearly memorizing his requests.

She says, "You've suffered heavy blood loss, Lord Ian. Flora said you'd recover quickly and mentioned you'd want to eat and speak with her right away. She and I cleaned you and bandaged you and I suspect her assessment is quite correct." There is a hint of blushing in her complexion for a moment and she quickly continues, "In any case, she recommended that you rest for the rest of the day. She left for Windborne soon after we took care of you and mentioned not being able to reach April. She had to get in touch with your mother... As for the King, I'm fairly certain he is still away."

"And I am sorry, it was my own fault for you to startle me... I was rather caught up in this book," she mentions.

When she blushes, Ian thinks, so we've met personally.

"Well, if you don't mind, I'm going to lounge around in bed for awhile. If Eric isn't here, then who is in charge? My neck is killing me. Can you keep me well supplied with water and one last thing."

Ian smiles.

"You certainly seem to know me well enough, and I don't even know your name?"

"My apology, Milord. I am Nadia. My father is Archduke Furlong," she adds as if it were supposed to ring a bell, which it doesn't. "And Lord Caine is in charge while the King is away," she informs him.

All the while, she has moved closer to his side and she checks his neck and nearby wounds. She smells of a light and gentle perfume, jasmine and orange blossoms.

"Should I get you anything else?" she asks quietly.

Just then, Ian feels a trump contact reaching him strongly. This reminds him that a trump contact may have been what has awoken him in the first place.

"If anything weird happens, get someone to Trump me."

Ian relaxes and answers the Trump.

"Who is it?"

Nadia has just enough time to make a confused expression and quickly nod. She heads for the door when he begins his conversation.

Ian hears her voice before he can see her.
"Your mother," Deirdre says from her room in Rebma. "How are things going for you?" she asks, already studying him carefully.

Ian waves to Nadia, to let her know everything is okay.

"Hi Mom. Everything went as planned in the usual way. Hero rescues damsel in distress, hero goes to strange places, hero spills a bunch of his blood and wakes up to a call from his mother."

Ian chuckles.

"I can only assume Aunt Flora and company are to thank for saving my life. I was looking more like a porcupine than your son when I got back. I just hope things in Windborne are okay. Have you heard from April?"

Ian looks tired and very pale, but his eyes have their usual sparkle and devil-may-care attitude they usually do.

"I haven't, not since her stint in Windborne when she mentioned you and Flora were still there... Flora borrowed Llewella's trump of April but could not reach her. Do I need to be worried? What's happening in Windborne exactly?" Deirdre asks. She looks poised, but Ian can read his mother well and notices that she might actually and genuinely be worried, though she hides it behind layers of indifference and hints of disappointment.

"Not much. A House of Chaos moved in. Some bird-men are in the area. There's some weird people from Shadow hanging out in the mountains. Faeries. The usual."

Ian's look tells her that he doesn't feel like going into detail.

"I'm just looking forward to talking to his Stupendous Pomposity but I hear he isn't in the castle, so I have no idea who's running the asylum just now."

Ian drains his glass of water and refills it.

"If that guy had fired three inches to the North-east you'd be talking to a corpse right now. Things got a little hectic for me. I'm glad Flora and April were safe."

She looks thoughtful while Ian shares the vague details available. "Do you know when Eric will be back? ... And do let me know when you find out who is in charge during his absence."

...

"When will you be back to your old self?" she asks. "April might have mentioned I needed one of you to return to Amber, and I am rather glad it's you."

"I'm not sure. Ten more minutes of bleeding and I would finally be immune to Trump calls, demonic possession and everything else for that matter. I guess once my femoral artery and my neck wound are healed I'll be ready to run around and kick some ass again. Until then, unless what you need me for can handled from bed, I'm pretty much out of action, don't you think?"

Deirdre can't help but notice the sarcasm in Ian's voice.

"Oh, Ian. Don't be so melodramatic... I'm talking to you and you're wanting me to be worried for your health. I get it : you put yourself in danger for Shadowfolks that matter to Flora. So unless you make the point of explaining why exactly it is that my son almost died, I suggest you begin focusing on your prompt recovery and the next, very real, rescue mission."
