|
|
At the top of a low-sloped hill, surrounded by bare steppes and a great mist, Faylinn arrives upon an ancient tree. It is not massive, but looks sturdy and she can sense that it roots deep into the earth. At last, she has come upon Yggdrasil, as Benedict had described it to her.
Beyond the tree, she beholds a great wide valley sloping downward. She cannot see beyond a quarter mile in any direction due to the white-hued mist surrounding this part of Shadow. |

Faylinn neatly plants the staff she'd brought with her in the ground before advancing to look down into the valley; she isn't too keen to lose the way she'd come. After a long moment surveying the mist on all sides, she shakes her head and murmurs a softly disgusted, "I have never liked fog."
With that, she turns to face the tree and pads towards it. She rests a hand on the trunk when she reaches it and adds, "I wonder what you've seen..." |

"Mostly fog..." comes a recently awakened voice. "Don't like the fog too much myself, I'll admit."
The voice itself could come from nowhere but the tree itself.
After a pause, Yggdrasil asks, "Would you kindly move your staff a bit to the right? It makes my root tingle..." |

Fay looks up at the tree with something of a dumbfounded stare for a beat or two. Father didn't mention it could talk out loud...
Bemusedly, she crosses back to the staff and moves it about a foot to the right. "I'm terribly sorry," she answers. "I did not think to look for your roots before I planted it there. Is that better?" |

She sees no face upon the tree, but the tone of Yggdrasil's voice betrays a smile, "Much better, thank you."
She can hear cawing from down in the valley below.
"What brings you here, traveler? Not shade, I assume..." |

| "Not at all," Fay answers, smiling. She moves back to the trunk and settles down on the ground beside it. "I am a student of nature; my father told me there was a great tree that stood where Order and Chaos met, so I came to see for myself." |

| "I am indeed the one your father spoke of. You may call me Yggdrasil if you like. What is your father's name?" he asks casually. |

| "Benedict," Faylinn answers. And then, almost as an afterthought, "Prince of Amber." |

After a pause, the tree says, "Benedict. A quiet and contemplative man. He camps out here at times."
After another pause, "I wish I could visit Amber one day." He chuckles and says, "Although that's quite unlikely to happen." |

| "Yes, that would be an accurate description of him," Faylinn agrees. "He didn't mention that he had camped here. What is it you would like to visit in Amber, if I might ask?" She hesitates. "Oh, I'm sorry. I've neglected to introduce myself; my name is Faylinn." |

"Well met, Faylinn. Amber as Oberon described it to me sounds like a very special place. There isn't one place specifically that is appealing. It is simply the wish of a sedentary being."
After a pause, Yggdrasil sighs and says, "As fascinating as that great symbol in the heart of the castle, I'm not much for caves... But the forest, Kolvir, and the scent of the sea air. Ahh, that would be something. I can almost smell it on you, and in your blood."
"You call yourself a student of nature, huh? Tell me about the things you've seen, if you would." |

| "I thought the forest might draw you," Faylinn answers. "But I thought it best to ask; I have been surprised before." She leans back on her elbows, looking up into the tree's branches. "I was in a world once where all the flowers seemed to breathe. In and out, in and out, all on a day so still that breath was the only thing to move the leaves of the trees." She chuckles softly. "I was quite embarrassed to learn, when I moved to speak to them, that the flowers were actually butterflies. Some of them were bigger than my head." |

As one of Ygg's branches leans closer to Faylinn, he says "If my roots could grow all the way to Amber they would, but it is quite outside of my reach I'm afraid."
After listening to Faylinn's depiction Yggdrasil says, "It sounds quite lovely and peaceful... It is a bit lonely here at times. I've only felt butterflies through the branches of another."
...
"An amberite's nature is quite fascinating to me. I grow while stationary while your kin seems to grow with your ability to travel, it seems." _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

Faylinn smiles up at the tree. "I will bring you some butterflies," she says seriously, "the next time I come to visit. They have short lives, poor things, but they do travel well as chrysalises."
Sailing onward conversationally, as though they had already discussed the idea that she'd be back, she offers, "It is possible to grow without travel, but it is very slow. It's a matter of waiting for change to come and force you to grow versus going out and finding ways to grow on your own. The one may take a day or a century and happens briefly; the other is steady and sure." |

"Mmh, a chrysalis, huh? Shadow life is so interesting..." Ygg observes.
...
"A wise observation," Yggdrasil concurs.
Near to Faylinn, an egg-sized acorn falls from a branch high in the tree. "Take this with you, Faylinn, and let it grow where you think it appropriate, if you would. I am unsure if it can grow elsewhere successfully, but I believe it might give me a way to grow further, in a sense." _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage
