Finn laughs dangerously, an honest and unpleasant sound, "By all means, if you can find it, pay it a visit. Be sure to say hello to my Mentor." He smiles, "You haven't even the balls to come at us directly. You are not only craven, you are boring."

He turns to Fay, "Rip whatever you can from the puppets mind, claw out the master's eyes if you must." He glances around, "Then I behead them all, just to be sure. But hurry, Shadow is being worked, and our window is closing." Finn holsters his pistol, draws his sword, and moves to behead the nearest man. He begins with thrusts to the heart and both lungs, and then takes the head.

Faylinn nods. "I shall see what I can find."

She turns to the downed man, her head still tipped slightly. "Do you know about blowfish, O disembodied voice?" she asks thoughtfully. "They puff themselves up when they are afraid, to try to chase off predators by looking big. Shall we find out how big a fish you actually are?" She reaches for the man's mind, all her defenses firmly in place.

She reaches into the mind of the man and before she finds any useful memories, she finds the mind of the blowfish. Expanded and tearing at the man's mind, it turns its attention to her invasion. It resists Faylinn's assault intensely and they seem fairly evenly matched at the moment.

The corpses all around are punctured and decapitated with ease. Finn has the chance to notice that when a man's Mark of Power has been hit, the body has shifted back to more common features.

Faylinn is nothing if not patient; she isn't sure if it's something she'd inherited or something she'd learned, and she's fairly certain that not even her mother could tell her which. Finn said to hurry, and she intends to... just in her own way.

She lets the blowfish wear itself out battering against the main of her defenses and starts sending thin tendrils of thought out, searching for cracks in the other's defense. After all, roots can break stone...

Finn observes the change in the men, and then rips off a clean piece of cloth from one. He uses it to wipe the blood, bone fragments and bits of brains from his face, and then tosses it aside. He steals their ammunition, and ruins their weapons if Fay's magic has not already done so. Then he wedges their rifles butt first between cracks in the rocks, where they can be seen at a distance, and mounts three of their heads on his makeshift pikes. Just to be clear, he turns those around whose sigils are mostly intact, should someone in the know come looking. As Ojirasan once mentioned to him; nothing says 'go no further' or 'reconsider' like a head or a body on a pike.

He cleans his blade and returns to stand near Fay, observing the contest of Wills, and ready to support his Sister if necessary.

She finds a few entrances into the blowfish's mind, but they are warded by a complex language of magic unknown to her. Undoing them would likely force her to drop some of her own defenses, and it would take time.

There is a piercing thought on the surface of its mind and reading it is an option. A potentially painful one, but it is an opening after all.

Fay takes the opening; she entered the situation looking for more information, after all.

Finn stands by silently, eying the sky. He says, "I'm here if you need me." And stands in arm's reach, waiting for the contest to be over. His lips press into a line, as he remembered Benedict asking him to keep Faylinn safe.

As she thought, it is a trap of sorts. But there is a reward: she sees a feverish looking fat bulbous being lounging in a bath. This bath is an altar, at least it is what it seems to her. The thing, barely humanoid - though it does have two arms and what looks like three heads joined and melded together - regards her through the psychic link.

He is drawing her in, sharing insignificant memories of strange, mad worlds and dark rituals she would not wish to perform.

She is unsure whether he was able to steal any surface thoughts at this time...
The blowfish is resisting her still... An impressive display thus far.

On the outside, Finn can see Faylinn beginning to sweat, her body temperature beginning to increase, like a fever. This could be an effect of the intense concentration, or something else.

Finn considers things for only a second, and then curses. He stands behind Fay, and calls out to Blake. "No one mounts this rock, Blake! Kill them and eat them if they try!" Then he gently cups Fay's face, and joins his Will to hers. "You're the Engineer." He whispers, "I'm just extra coal for the fire."

Faylinn pauses, letting the bait wait for her while she gathers herself, and regards the creature. "Lantern-fish," she says thoughtfully, not bothering with whether the word is aloud or mental. "Creature of the dark, with just enough light to tempt. Are you clever enough to be afraid of a bigger fish, I wonder? Or are you more afraid of the light?"

The moment she feels Finn enter the mental landscape, she scoops him up into her defenses as quickly as possible.

Our lantern fish fiend feels the added support and begins dropping openings in favor of defenses. It remains in the poor man's mind, whose form continues to shift to human-like features. It seems that the man will die soon or that his connection to the thing is going to fade. Either way, they have very little time to push and they know it is dangerous to use a dead man's mind as a battleground.

~Forward or back?~ Faylinn asks Finn quickly.

Finn growls, ~ We have the coward's measure. Our conduit is dying. Leave the coward to sit in his own piss and excrement. He'll not trouble us again. ~

~Then we go. But...~ Faylinn hesitates, and then, ~I know you mean to serve this one as the others, but let us give him his freedom as we leave.~

With that, she starts their retreat, at the same time reaching to sever the connection between the man and the creature.
