The man in black stands out from the sailors but Altair notices him for the first time. From this distance, he can tell it isn't Gerard, but he can't make out much more than this.

...

The men around Orcini follow the captain's orders and soon, Orcini and other excited volunteers begin to row toward the dark shape as it turns around to strike again. The whale-thing is a bit too far to be harpooned by even the best of them, so they bide their time carefully.

"Mindless beast or purposeful submariner?" Orcini wondered aloud. "Does it see us as a meal, or a threat, or just a piece of flotsam on the ocean to be played with? In the end, it does not matter. It is in our way and soon it will feel the jab of harpoons and if we do our jobs well we can see if its blubber is good eating." Orcini hefted his harpoon and waited. The moment he saw his chance, Orcini would let fly.

Altair closely watches the soldiers as they row out.

"This beast..." he whispers to himself, "they are not ready for it". He grips the railing tightly and shouts, "More than half of those boys better come back here with their damn heads still on their shoulders!

The stutterer and the first mate glare at Altair when he shouts his warning. "You're bad luck, Sir. That's bad luck..." The first mate says.

...

Orcini is able to get a good shot at the thing and the harpoon hits near to the front of the beast. It immediately veers off course and heads towards the 'Cavalier'. The rest of the sailors out with Orcini throw more harpoons, some harnessed to the boat via heavy rope. Some hit successfully and the boat is being towed with the monster. Orcini is able to get several more hits.

Meanwhile, the men from the 'White Rose' row out to get closer to the beast. Not within harpoon range just yet.

The sailors aboard the 'Cavalier' brace themselves for impact.

"Luck, my friends, is the scapegoat of the man unwilling to embrace destiny. All luck is good for is bare survival in the worst situations."

[OOC by the GM: I edited out Altair bracing for the impact since he is on the 'White Rose' Wink ]

Orcini remains upon two feet as the beast tows their little craft in its wake. "There is no escaping us, dark one. Only death will free you from these ropes and spears!" He thunders this truth at the whale even as it makes ready to strike the Cavalier. "Come lads," he calls out to the sailors with him, "we've got time for another shot. Let's make it count." Orcini knows little of whales but if it rises out of the water to strike it will expose its eye and if it dives it should expose its tail. Either way, Orcini aims for these tender points and let's another harpoon fly.

The first mate on the 'White Rose' spits and watches as Orcini releases another two harpoons awfully fast upon the beast. Then, the impact with the 'Cavalier'...

A great sound resonates and the ship is shaken. The beast sinks underneath the ship and pulls the whaling boat towards the 'Cavalier'. The men aboard hesitate for a moment then quickly affair themselves trying to cut and untie the ropes...

"Clever beast." Orcini salutes the whale's tactics with his words but saves his actions for freeing the ship before it collides with the Cavalier. He drops the harpoon in favor of drawing a thick bladed knife and deftly hacking at as many harpoon lines as he can reach.

The possibility of an ocean swim bothered Orcini little. Of all on this voyage, he was most suited to survive such a journey. Indeed, the prospect of taking the fight to the beast's home ground appealed to him. Still, the sailors were worthy of continued life and the boat useful equipment. He would take measures to save them both.

As Orcini and the sailors cut through the lines, the boat is freed and reels back, adjusting to the lack of pull. The men begin to row, veering left to follow in the quiet wake of the 'Cavalier'.
Orcini sees the shape of the beast deep below the surface, coming towards them or the frigate, he is unsure yet.

Up on the Cavalier's deck, Altair can spot Gerard make an appearance. Gerard shouts orders to his men and reaches for what looks like a trump waving at Altair.
A moment later, Altair can feel the coming of a trump contact.

Orcini watches the beast surface with a wary eye. He grabs another harpoon more for the comforting feeling of a weapon in his hand than out of an expectation that he will use it. His muscles twitch as the urge to change comes over him. If it becomes clear that the whaling boat is the target, then Orcini will be over the side and into the water.

As the dark shape approaches from below, Orcini can see that it aims at the frigate rather than the whaling boat. The sailors on the boat are rowing away as fast as they can manage, which should put them in the clear by the time the sea beast reaches the surface.

As is his talent, Altair blocks out all noise that surrounds him. He concentrates entirely on the trump call and says, "Gerard?"

"Yes. Altair, we need to split up here... I'll draw away the beast from your ship. No time for you to slow things down other than pick up the men on boats... This whale-thing, is a pointless thing for our men to chase. I suggest you keep them in check, understood?" He looks serious and is trying to gauge Altair's reaction carefully.

"You can handle the sea charts as we discussed. First mate Mason can help you out if you need it. Take Orcini and the rest of the would-be whalers with you. You're only two days from your destination and you can trump me if things go bad for you."

It did not sit well with Orcini to retreat from a conflict. Still, he must concede that all their efforts went unnoticed by the great beast below. Anything that swims the Black Tide would be hardy. Leaving the other sailors to man the oars, Orcini looks to the signalman on the Cavalier to see what Gerard's orders are for them. With the beast aiming for the Cavalier it would be unsafe to try and rejoin it. Likely they would be sent to the White Rose.

"These princelings know not what I can do nor would they trust me to do it". Orcini thinks bitterly. "You My King, would have already ordered me to enter the fray." Orcini watches the dark shape rising for only a moment more. "Then why do I hesitate now?"

Like a shot Orcini is over the side of the boat and into the chill water. Gills sprout from his neck almost as a reflex and he dives deep with webbed hands. During his time spent in Shadow, Orcini had learned of these creatures known as animals, adapted to their environments and no where else. Such a thing is both a wonder and a thing to be pitied. Still, their forms prove useful. Arms and legs double, thin out and stretch as bone slides into strong cartilage. The torso thickens as the face becomes only two large eyes and a gnashing beak. With his change completed, Oricini the kraken jets towards the great whale with tentacles to hold the beast fast and a beak to tear at its flesh.

As Orcini's mass increases and his body changes on his way down, he can see the beast was in fact a whale once. It's skin is rotting and weird algae is growing in its place. The eyes reflect the light from above in a reddish glow which increases the strange appearance of the whole thing.

The beast sees Orcini but does not stray from its intended path. Soon enough Orcini has reached it and wraps itself around its face, biting into its flesh with ease. His tentacle appendages are stung by coming in contact with the long algae. Orcini can also feel four harpoons still lodged into the thing in various places, the wounds oozing an oily substance that may once have been blood into the sea water.
