Eric looks at the would-be dancers from a distance and gives April a slight nod.
...
Rashik is, as expected, an exceptional dancer himself. He exchanges glances with her often, while Eric observes them from the sidelines, drinking wine in company of General Mwwr and Lady Efrain.
"Lady April, why do you leave Amber so quickly?" Rashik asks softly.

Rashik smiles and says, "Either way it's a shame, but I get the feeling it cannot be delayed or dismissed. Perhaps there will come a time when you will share the tale. You are coming back to us, aren't you, Lady April? Or are you to return to the Rebman court?"

"Who? Me? Oh, nothing really. I just really enjoy seeing hard-nosed politicians squirm. Not something I undertake myself, surely, but I enjoy it nonetheless." He laughs low at his own response, then dances a little bit closer, making his dance with her a tad more intimate. "You don't seem the political type, though. How are you related to the Royal family, exactly?"

April tenses at Rashik's approach. "I am exactly the daughter of Dierdre," she replies, and then a touch of sadness slips into her voice as she continues "and you are a very assertive dance partner." |

Rashik goes quiet and with added subtlety rectifies his position. It is the end of their dance and Rashik takes a step back, bowing low to her. When he rises, he is smiling and says, "Lady April, it was a pleasure and an honor to have the first dance."

Ariana presents April to a succession of dance partners, who are all more or less talented and conversational, but hardly have much to say.
Eric is still watching her closely and as time passes and dances are underway, April can see him pay more and more attention to her. She can see a bit of the passion she witnessed earlier. At one point, even Ariana notices and comments on it, asking in a whisper, "Lady April, have you noticed how the King looks at you?"

Despite the longing and possibly jealous looks from the King, the nobleman in the yellow jacket walks to April and says with a low bow, "Lady April, It is an honor to have this dance and a pleasure making your acquaintance. Please allow me to introduce myself: my name is Jacob James of Hauln, Count of somewhere around here... I have a title and everything," he jokes. His mannerisms and voice are much like Jean's, as well as his appearance.

"Don't stare," April whispers to Ariana. She flushes, and brushes self-consciously at the folds of her gown. "I think the dress worked."

"Oh," April breathes, quietly. She bites at her lip, and blinks rapidly as she takes a quick step back.
"I ... " she sighs "I can't." She turns to Ariana. "Please explain to them that ... uh ... I just can't. I ... need some air."
She turns and walks quickly, head held high, toward the open french doors to a nearby balcony. Once out of sight of the rest of the party, she leans on the ballustrade and lets out a long, ragged, half-sobbing breath. |

A couple comes out of the Shadows, they were obviously kissing, and leave the balcony, leaving April by herself for several moments.
Then she can hear footsteps approaching, the music of the feast drowned behind the open french doors easily by the steady night breeze. "Are you alright?" It is Eric.

....
"Count Jacob reminds me of someone," she says," ... someone I've been trying not to happen upon, because of ... y'know, how we are." She makes a bizarre little wiggly hand-wavey motion in front of her face to punctuate that last bit.
....
"It's not him, though," she insists. "Just a wierd coincidence and a really disorienting day." |

"You are free to leave the dining hall if it helps... I was hoping to catch a dance after the parade of peacocks, but I can live without it if I have to, I suppose." Eric gives April a tender smile, the Jewel of Judgment glows red like a magical beating heart on the outside of his dark courtly attire.

Eric lets the hand on April's shoulder fall to her hand and he takes it in his. "I'll give you a bit of time. I'll be looking forward to dancing with you in a while."
He squeezes her hand, caresses her face with his other hand and smiles at her.
