Faylinn regards the man on the ground for a moment with her head tipped slightly to one side. Then she blinks and shakes her head slightly. "You may blame me for that," and she points at the gun, "but I hardly think I deserve the blame for your friend. He was missing most of his face; his death was rather inevitable. I did not even hasten it along. Would you like to answer some questions?"

Finn eyes the man coldly, and kicks the knife away. "She has done what is necessary. You should have considered whom your targets were before you opened fire on them." He crouches, pistol still aimed at the main, and checks the mark on the back of his neck, without touching it if he can. "I might let you crawl out of here if you answer some questions." He presses the cold barrel of the pistol to the mark. "What's this?"

Gut-shot's voice is a whisper as he looks down and says, "Yes, of course. I'll answer anything..." His goat eyes pleading her.

...

Finn rips the black shirt, heavily soaked with blood, of the other man to reveal a fading black sigil. It is large and unknown to him. There is power there that he can sense. It looks like the shot he took to the shoulder has destroyed the sigil's abilities. The man's skin and features continue to change as the sigil fades.

Finn gets Fay's attention, "Look there, a mark -- a rune or some such. I think it was what gave them their inhuman attributes. It's fading and they're becoming normal as they die." He rolled the man over, "What was the name of the one who gave you all these marks?" He watches the man for continued changes, gaging what he's turning back into, and how drastic the change was.

The man continues to change, pigmentation returning to his skin, his eyes having reverted back to some typical denizen of a Shadow near to Cimarron. The mark continues to fade but remains visible, a strange scar. Finn notices that the man isn't dying.

Now, even his speech is shifting to an accented Thari. His eyebrows furrow, "His name is Vasheik... I-I think..." He looks confused, "He's leaving! He's... abandoning me!"

Faylinn glances briefly in Finn's direction, but her attention is, for the moment, on the man in front of her. "Tell me about the hunter," she prompts. "The one whose helm is horned."

Faylinn's guy looks livid and winces in pain, holding his gut with both hands now, "Lord Thestiel. The guy with the antlers. He showed up with the Black Road, an army of beasts and machines and a floating citadel..." He coughs up blood. After a wheezy sigh, he continues "The army was quickly overrun and they started recruiting..." More coughing, less blood.

"We poor saps took the job here... Powers were granted us, and instead of fighting in the front lines..." He points to the wall of smoke that Rebecca and Kade are racing towards. "... we just had to let no one pass here. He said riders would try to come through, but he didn't mention (bloody cough) how powerful..."

He looks damn pale, but his eyes and skin are not changing the way Finn's guy is.

"Do you have any water?"

"Who's leaving? What is happening to you?" Finn asks, "You're looking healthier by the minute, and I would consider letting you walk off this rock if you answer my questions." He continues, "If you were successful here, how did you mean to report that news?" He eyes the storm, "Quickly now, my patience is thin for those that shoot at my horse."

"Do you have any water?"

"No," Faylinn answers simply. "And you should not drink it even if I did." She squats down in the dirt so the man doesn't have to keep staring quite so far up at her. "Do you have a marking on your back like your friend did?"

"The- the mark! It must be... have been the link. I-It's like he's..." The man puts his left fist against his temple and grimaces painfully. "He's taking my memories! Vasheik... Vosheek... Ahhh!..."

The man swallows hard. Then he says, his breathing beginning to slow, "Yes, it's... on my chest. The mark, he called it... the Mark of Power." These men's resistance to pain is considerably remarkable... A human being would have gone into shock quite some time ago.

Finn frowns deeply, and with his pistol aimed at the man's heart, touches his forehead and as pragmatically and directly as possible, invades his mind searching for the last shreds of anything related to Vasheik. If necessary, he will call on the Pattern for a Psyhic Defense.

"I would like to see it," Faylinn says quietly. "Quickly, before your wound gets the better of you. It may be that your life can be saved, if yours is as his was. It is your choice whether you wish to remove your shirt yourself or whether you wish to allow me to cut it off."

Finn finds shadow and muck. His mind is unraveling, torn memories affected by the presence still in his head!
He glimpses the dark ritual summoning the Dark Mark upon thousands at a time: a bloody orgy of gore, sacrifices and rewarded survivors. The madness is unleashed upon them by thaumaturges, the reward is a mirror of the sanity they had before the ritual, and improved physical prowess. Before Finn can see the sorcerer who orchestrates the thing, he is assaulted via the mind of this would-be victim.

He fidgets with his vest and shirt using his free hand but finally says, "You do it." He throws his head back.

The mark is a horrid sigil, a skin growth or scar the size of a head. Its design does not look familiar to Faylinn. It spreads over the man's sternum and its bottom portion is covered in blood and gore from the wound.

She can feel magic at work there. A link to the source of those men's powers, perhaps. It is active still, but fades as the man's life is fading... Slowly but inevitably, it seems.
