With excitement, Ian goes to the key and grabs it, realizing after he's done so that if this is a trap, he's the fool.

If it isn't a trap, Ian opens the door and beholds Daniel's Pattern.

Behold the Pattern!

Ian sees it, but it's also kind of wrong. The color is light gray and fainter than the symbol blazing before him. It also has smudges and imperfections, where the lines are broken and erased. Additionally, some of its curves and angles are slightly off.

Reaching into his pocket, he takes out Flora's Trump. He stares longingly at her picture for a few moments, then returns to reality, intensifying his gaze into the Trump. Mentally, his mind starts moving the image of her ever so slightly and he redoubles his concentration.

"Flora."

Her movements and looks change to accommodate where she is. She is in a comfortable set of clothes, ready to head out if necessary. She smiles and exclaims, "Ian! You've made it alright."

Ian turns around so Flora can see the Pattern. "Can you see it?"

He looks around to see if anyone else has been disturbed by his voice, which is probably echoing nicely in the cave.

"What do you want to do? I can finish searching and then come back to you, bring you here, what do you think?"

She looks at the thing behind Ian for along time, with a worried look. "It is the Pattern then, isn't it?"

...

"You should stay in contact with me while you inspect it in case there's trouble. I can pull you through when you are done."

With a nod and a reassuring smile, Ian walks towards the Pattern, looking for a way to circumnavigate it.

Flora fishes out Ian's trump while he walks around. Eventually he can put his trump of her down and maintain the connection from her end so that he may observe the Pattern easily.

Ian can sense the power latent to the device. It is less awe inspiring and subdued in comparison to the Pattern he knows. The breaks and smudges in the design could potentially form a sort of maze all the way to the center of this Pattern.

"I'm at a loss. My understanding was that the castle Pattern was reversed in Rebma, because Rebma is the reflection of Amber, even down to the name, which is kind of silly if you really think about it. I don't know what the hell Tir-na-N'ogth's deal is."

He looks both exasperated and amused. "So what the hell is this? Hello? Weird Pattern?" He turns, laughing a bit. "What do you think?"

Flora looks interested, but the hint of worry is still there. "I am not sure what to make of it, really. I mean it is a sort of Pattern, but lesser, much like Daniel described. Daniel also claims it is safe to walks the breaks to the center and that is how he has attuned to it, from what I understand. He was rather vague about it and I suspected it was a power from Shadow rather than a reflection of Amber's Pattern, because he could do things the Pattern did not grant... What does it feel like? What else do you perceive there that I cannot feel via the trumps? Does it look safe to walk?"

"If it is anything like the Pattern, I do not think it a good idea to walk the breaks. You know what we were told. 'Stray from the path, and death will inevitably result.' Or as Mom so eloquently put it, 'Stay on the goddamned path, Ian!'"

He pauses for a moment, then concentrates on bringing the sign of the Pattern to his mind's eye. "I'm bringing the Pattern up. Maybe that will tell us something."

He kind of rambles and trails off as he talks, since bringing the Pattern up takes a good deal of his conversation. He sounds distracted.

"Did he say what kind of things he or it could do? Safe? Hell if I know. I can't do card tricks, much less any real magic. I'm going to bring the Pattern up and maybe try something with it. I just worry I may damage it with the Pattern, especially if this is some Shadow version of it."

Ian gets a quick smile from Flora, but her perplexed expression returns. "I know, this thing doesn't make any sense..."

Flora nods, waiting for him patiently.

"He mentioned the center of the design will take him into Shadow and that for the most part he could walk Shadow as we do, though his walks hardly sound pleasant. I make a point to travel through lovely spots of Shadow, while everything he brings on his path are twisted versions of his expectations. Much the same way this Pattern is a twisted and strange version of our own. But still. Windborne is of substance, and I believe we have this sign to thank for it. I don't think you could shift it away without being extremely forceful..."

Indeed, the sign of his own Pattern reveals how close Windborne is to Amber. He can sense limited pathways into Shadow. The energy emanating from this sign is weak, but has the potential of making those attuned to it real, the way amberites are real, which means the sign and others attuned to it may cast Shadows of their own, though Ian suspects it is unlikely this Pattern casts a proper shadow out there. Alas, his theories on the arcane are biased to what his mother bothered to teach him... or chose to hide from him, he is suddenly reminded.

Ian looks at Flora, and she can see the frustration in his eyes, coupled with the inadequacy he feels at having to decipher something as cosmic as a new kind of Pattern.

"Um..well..if this Pattern makes people real, we should probably try to find out if that gives someone the ability to walk Our Pattern. If it does, then this thing has to be either guarded or destroyed, because it is a danger to Amber. If it only gives twisted results, then it probably can't be made to walk into Amber, the way we can. I hope."

He clenches a fist in frustration and turns, looking for something or someone to smash.

"I..just don't have the education to reason out the workings of this. I can only see strategic and tactical threats to us and to Amber. Hell, if someone can use this to teleport anywhere, they could teleport into Eric's bed and kill him. Hey, there's a thought."

He cracks up laughing, although Flora notices he keeps a healthy distance away from Daniel's Pattern. He takes another look around, to ensure nobody is sneaking up on him, taps the handle of Hollowshade to reassure himself it is there, then looks back to Flora. "Do you want to come through? We can always say we wanted to go out for a romantic moonlight walk or something?"

Flora says, "I think you're right, the niceties of our hosts can be delayed in favor of dealing with this thing."

She looks around the room and extends her hand to his. When he takes it she steps forward and is next to him in Daniel's Pattern room. She slips Ian's trump back into her case. She begins inspecting the room quietly.

Ian watches quietly as Flora examines Daniel's Pattern. He walks behind her, perhaps twenty feet back, and would normally take advantage of the position to admire her perfect body, but instead he wonders what it is about her, his mother, Eric and the rest that makes him feel so inadequate sometimes. Could it be that they used it as a self-defense mechanism, to protect them from their children? The very thought saddens Ian.

He wonders what April is doing at this moment. Probably hanging around with Jean or someone else very cool and right for her and having a great time. The thought of April puts a smile back on his face, and Ian almost walks onto Daniel's Pattern before realizing he is really lost in thought and pulls up short.

He resumes following and watching.
