Zach wouldn't kill Wyatt! she protests. Why would you think that? And while we're on the subject; why was Hank always after Wyatt

She wondered why the hell she was arguing with McCoy anyway and not in bed with her husband where she belonged. Of course, she wasn't positive someone wasn't going ot start banging on her door again, but still...

The old McCoy is quiet for a moment. The chuckle starts up again, low and deep.
'Rebecca,' the old mans voice says calmly, 'you are already tryin ta change that subject before I can answer ya: Zach's condition and Hank's story are different things...'
He sighs. 'You just don't understand killin', do ya? A killer knows another killer... And a haunt like me has other insights you couldn't imagine... Trust me on this, Zach was gonna kill Wyatt. T'was a fair warnin' for me ta tell ya... With Wyatt gone, maybe Zach'll change back, but I wouldn't count on it.

'As for Hank, the boy's an idiot and I've cursed tha day the gun ended in his hands. He's a McCoy alright, but not of my blood... Tha boy could scarcely hear me and I admit I spent a fair share of my time messin' with him...'

She frowns at the moonlight to consider. Hank always was more flash then bang. Seemed ta think he was owed somethin'.

I still don't see why Zach'ld wanna off his brother. Zach had everything Wyatt did. He was too young for Dad's trainin' him when he taught us, but Wyatt and I taught him when he was old enough.

'Nah, it's not jealousy, Rebecca... There's more than that. Zach is perturbed, chang'd... He has a poor hold on what's real, as far as I reckon. Wyatt's away, so you ain't gotta dwell on it. Unless you'll do somethin' with it.'

Then, with a serious tone, he adds 'Tha boy-thing is more of a danger ta ya and Wyatt right now, I'll say. Ya can't be waitin' too long with it... Yer gettin' attached a lil', I can sense that much.'

And I don't have anything but your sayin' so that he's a real danger, she says, back to frowning again. But I think you're wrong. I think Caine is a bigger threat right now. Caine and his creepy shadow things. That's what we need ta keep an eye on.

She sighs heavily and scrubs her face with one hand. And we'll have ta go back to Cimarron eventually. Was it the attack that messed with his head, ya reckon?

He chuckles and adds 'I know you ain't gonna like it much, but if ya can kill yer uncle and get away with it, ya should do it. Before he suspects ya know somethin'. Even if ya can't get away with it, yer dad'll cover fer ya, won't he?'

Why are you so interested in having me kill someone? She demanded hotly. You've been at me since you started talkin'. Just stop it. They'll be enough killin' even for you soon enough.

She drains her glass and stands. I'm goin' ta bed. Hold the fort. Or something.

Rebecca stalks back into the bedroom. She was, by god, going to get some sleep and the next person who woke her up better be Wyatt or her father.

In her room, Wyatt is still asleep, undisturbed. It seems his dreams have passed, or he is too exhausted to react.

Outside, the moonlight keeps everything still, not much time has passed and she may perhaps rest as she had intended. The coldness of the outside and the warmth of her bed being the best promises made to her this night.

Rebecca crawls into bed and curls up around Wyatt's warmth. His arm automatically wraps around her and his position adjusts to accommodate her. She's tired; mentally, physically, emotionally. It feels like the day has lasted a week, and she still has to deal with Eric when he comes back, and Caine until then.

In the meantime, she closes her eyes and tries to think on pleasant things instead of the world falling apart around her.
