She maintains her smile and by the time he is done talking, it has become nearly devilish. She nods, "I should be able to get you those things by tomorrow morning. Trump me again then."

"Excellent and um...Mom? I'm sorry I snapped at you."

After she replies Ian closes the Trump and checks the wound, then elevates the wounded leg and gets another full day of bedrest. Tomorrow could be a very busy day.

Deirdre raises an eyebrow, "Certainly, Ian. Get well soon."

Lifting the bandages enough to take a peek, Ian sees that the cut is clean and the flesh is already repairing, causing him to itch a bit in the tender spots. His inner thigh feels warm and he wouldn't want to run for a couple of days, though he thinks that after today he could run, painfully. It will be a few more days until it is fully healed. Most of the other wounds he can get to and look at were not as deep and he might begin scarring as early as tomorrow.
He cannot look at the wounds on his back, but they feel alright.

Ian thinks; 'the best thing about this plan is that its simple and should work...I just have to find Corwin.'

He goes through his Trumps and looks at the one of Corwin, staring at it.

"I hope you're worth it. You've sure dictated enough of my life already."

The trump does not feel cold in Ian's hands. Corwin is looking back at him, an image he remembers since childhood.

There is a knock at the door, and the male servant's voice says from beyond the door, "I have family news, Lord Ian." He lets himself in carrying a smaller tray with a variety of local remedies Ian is familiar enough with to know it wouldn't help his metabolism very much, if at all.

He places the tray next to the larger one and pulls out a wad of paper from his coat pocket. He clears his throat and says, "Lord Caine is in charge, acting as regent during the King's leave. Lady Florimel is still away with twenty Royal Guards, as approved by Princess Rebecca, who happens to be here as well with what is rumored to be her husband. Lords Julian and Gerard are away, while Lords Corwin and Random remain imprisoned. That accounts for family seen recently, Lord Ian." He folds the piece of paper and places it inside his coat and adds, "I do recall many of your cousins leaving the castle a few days ago, Lord Ian, though I do not know all of their names, I could find out if you would like."

"Thank you very much. I've never met Princess Rebecca, I guess I should get her a wedding gift. Antibiotics don't seem to function well in Amber so I might be leaving tonight or tomorrow to go into Shadow, where I can get some better medical care. This thing is killing me and I can barely walk."

Ian smiles at him and when he shifts in bed, he winces, hoping that the servant will eventually relay how weak and laid up Ian was.

"Other than that, everything has been great. Thank you and if I get a chance, I'll pay my respects to Caine or Rebecca. Or both. Thanks."

Ian looks at the platter with the home remedies. "I won't need that stuff. I have some good old fashioned amoxicillin in my immediate future."

"Certainly, Lord Ian," the man says with a genuine smile, looking at Ian struggle a bit in his bed. "If there is anything more I can get you..." he adds as he picks up the tray of remedies and begins heading for the door.

Ian nods to himself, content that what he has planned should work, and if not, he'll get to catch up on his sleep when dead, or in a cell next to Corwin.

Laughing to himself now, he falls asleep easily, the beating he has inflicted on his body still asking for more sleep.

Which it gets.

Ian sleeps well and deep and it is only by reflex that he stirs when the light outside is extinguished by nightfall and Lady Nadia something enters and leaves his room briefly with a vague apology. Ian's mind is muddled by the first real rest in a long, long time.

...

Allowing himself to rest again once everything has gone quiet, Ian dreams this time.

He dreams he is walking a field of brown dirt, at night, torches places every twenty feet forming a sort of passage. Beyond the torches' light, there is really nothing but starless night and quiet shadows.

Near each torch there are holes, four feet wide and twenty feet deep. The soil is loose and would surely collapse and bury those who tried to escape.

He hears Corwin's voice singing a song from one of the holes, even laughing from time to time.

He hears April weep.

He hears Deirdre yelling for help.

[OOC: I know this is just a short dream sequence, but just for kicks, feel free to tell me what the 'dream Ian' would do... Or Ian could awaken before the dream resolves... Up to you.]

Rope. Ian thinks to himself. Never any damned rope around when you need it.

"April?!" Ian yells. Corwin will be rescued soon enough.

"APRIL!!!"

If those faeries hurt her...Corwin would be on his own, and April would be avenged.

He tosses and turns, growing increasingly disturbed by this dream turned nightmare.

"APRIL!!!" He runs from hole to hole, looking in without falling in, but growing more and more careless.

"APRIL!!!!!!"

He falls into one of the holes and his hands scramble for purchase as he slides down the twenty feet, hitting the botton with an impact to his back.

Four feet wide?

Ian braces his back against one wall and crawls up using hands and feet to crawl up the small shaft.

He gets to the top and climbs out and yells to Corwin what to do...and falls into the hole behind him. Was that there a moment ago?

This time he pulls a bunch of dirt on top of him on the way down.

Ian awakens with a start, soaked with sweat. The bedclothes are all on top of his head.

He sits up, feeling tired, groggy and completely out of sorts.

It is night and the moonlight flows through the window freely giving the entire room an eerie feel. Ian feels unsafe... Probably because of the uneasy dream he experienced.

He feels tired and in pain.

There is a couple of sandwiches, cheese and bread as well as wine and cigarettes, all stashed onto an ornate looking tray left at his bedside.

Everything is quiet and Ian can hear the wind hitting the window pane, whistling gently.

Ian hasn't lived as long as he has by ignoring his paranoid tendencies.

He gets out of bed and dresses quickly, then girds himself with Hollowshade.

He wraps up the food and drink and wine and smokes and hides them in a drawer.

Thanks Mom, he thinks.

Ian heads out into the hallway, ready to draw at the slightest hint of trouble.

The hallway is bathed in moonlight from lightwells every fifty feet and the gilded portraits and people in the paintings hung all about seem to be regarding Ian from strange angles. There is a slight draft in the hallway, keeping it cool. Almost cold. He can smell the pines and the sea air.

Ian finds that his wounds have closed properly and are now sore, the pain simply the information of the healing process. He feels that pushing himself too far might reopen the cut made at his thigh due to its depth, but it would take a lot.

He hears a pair of voices speaking quietly. the voices come from Flora's or Gerard's room. Sneaking closer confirms they come from Flora's. Nothing can be distinctly understood. Whispers...

Whatever Flora is up to is her own business. Time for some scouting.

Ian heads down towards the main hall, partly to get some food to eat and partly to stretch his legs and see how busy the castle is at night and what level of guarding the guards are at.

Walking down the hall to the stairwell, Ian encounters three groups of three royal guards, who straighten when Ian approaches and nod politely when he reaches them. The stairs are very dark due to the 'L' shape of the end of the royal hall and the lack of a light well near the stairs.

As Ian steps out of the shadows at the bottom of the stairs, he notices the embers of the four wide fireplaces of the main hall are cooling and a dozen castle guards, outfitted with lanterns, patrolling the great hall and usual lower level corridors in two groups.

The tables, benches and chairs have been moved out of the way and none of the food is left. Servants are away and it is unlikely anyone is left in the kitchens.

Once again, guards that come across Ian look him over and nod as a greeting.
