|
|
Nearly a week has passed since the three Amberites' arrival. Their chance encounter with King Melor and the tree folks of the Black Road enhanced their odds of making allies out of the people of Greymoor, but three days ago, everything seemed to have gone wrong...
~~~
When Finn became impatient of waiting for Rebecca, three days into Greymoor, Finn had Faylinn attempt a trump contact, claiming that he himself could not get through. Faylinn, then Arkadios, confirmed quickly that trumps did not function properly here, and though the group had theories about why, it did not make King Melor's view of the Amberites any easier.
Finn had promised weapons and an envoy from Amber and they had news of neither the small army of men supposedly traveling into Greymoor, nor had they news of Princess Rebecca, Daughter of Eric, King of Amber, as she was mentioned to King Melor.
Though they had been welcomed into King Melor's court and had him agree to send small missions into the other regions of Greymoor to rally the people to fight the Road's denizens together, the three Amberites sensed that his patience was wearing thin and he had cordially confronted Finn about his intentions and promises. Finn had no choice but to scout ahead of the small Amber army and bring them into Almirior back to help King Melor's defenses. Meanwhile, he had ordered Faylinn and Arkadios to deal with the trump situation.
Meanwhile, Faylinn was being buggered by the spirits of Greymoor, begging for her to offer her blood as sacrifice: the libation that would continue granting her power in Greymoor.
Every night, Arkadios felt the Black Road grow stronger, like blood spreading on a canvas, pumped by an quickening hearbeat. The spirits of Greymoor also approached him with demands of a blood sacrifice at the temple in the dark forest, though they seemed more reluctant with him.
~~~
Finn has been gone for three days and they cannot hear from him until the trumps function again... Or he returns with the promised troops. _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

Faylinn has been doing her best to be polite and charming, but her best is sometimes too frank, and often distractable - and the constant harrassment of the spirits only makes it worse. After being awoken four times in one night by a group of small forest spirits she might ordinarily have found quite fascinating, she has had more than enough.
Resplendant in a long dress of purple, complete with a gauzy wrap and a necklace of her own design, all of which look more appropriate to some formal setting, Faylinn goes in search of Arkadios. As soon as she finds him and they can find a private corner to speak, she announces, "I am going into the forest. I suggest you tell Finn I did not tell you before I departed, or he will likely be cross with us both." |

[ooc: if you guys have questions about the few days spent, feel free to message me or email me. I figured that there will be certain things Kade and Faylinn would have wanted to find out, but I did not want to write a novel about it. So yeah, just ask ] _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

Kade smiles, he leans back in his chair which he has positioned such that he may take advantage of the sunlight streaming in through the nearby window, "Is that wise? You plan on going alone I suppose." he asks rhetorically.
After a moment he sighs then he looks at Faylinn, his expression becomes more sober, "Would you let me accompany you? I for one do not fear Finn's wrath, I do however fear for you if you travel into darkness alone." |

"I am planning to take Traveller," Faylinn answers cheerfully, as though she fully believes the horse is an adequate substitute for a human being watching her back. "So I will not be entirely alone." She settles down on a nearby chair, spreading her skirts tidily, and smiles at him, laughter in her eyes, "I do not particularly fear Finn's wrath, but there is no reason we both must listen to the lecture I am going to receive."
She, too, sobers quickly. "I do not think we should both go. Firstly, our host is agitated enough without both of us disappearing with no explanation. Secondly, there is still the matter of the Trumps not working; I am not convinced that this errand will affect that. And lastly - if others of the Family arrive, one of us had best be here for introductions or there is likely to be unpleasantness." |

A sad smile appears on Kade's face, perhaps feigned, "And so I am trapped princess. As you say it were best one of us be here."
With a sigh he closes his eyes then casually eases the tension from his neck, "How will I know you are not in danger, the Trumps have failed us it seems but is there no way we might... link, we are both adepts after all?"
Kade opens his eyes and seems to study Faylinn as he awaits her answer. |

Faylinn regards him thoughtfully, her head tilting to one side. "We are in the middle of a war, outside easy access to a single relative with nonmagical combat expertise, in a possibly hostile nation trying to negotiate aid, and waiting on a newly-minted princess to attend to a job that I am not yet convinced she knows how to do. How will you know if I'm not in danger?" She smiles faintly. "Forgive me; I am afraid that the last months have brought out my cynical side."
"I think," she continues, "that this is an acceptable risk, and one that is not dire enough to warrant any sort of linkage. These are spirits of Nature, and Nature is my realm of mage-work. A messenger-spell should suffice, should I need aid; watch for blue butterflies, o trapped princeling." Faylinn's smile broadens slightly. "And in the meantime, perhaps we have been looking in the wrong direction for what is blocking our Trumps. Maybe it is a field, like what we encountered in Cimarron? Perhaps the two are related?" |

| Faylinn rolls her eyes in the direction of the voice - or as near as she can pinpoint the voice - and says firmly, "Be patient, o spirit. I am coming." |

After leaving her cousin to his own devices again, Faylinn continues down to the stables to collect Traveller. Although she doesn't expect him to actually be in the stables; that was one discussion she had decided it wasn't worth pursuing for a while. Particularly not after spending an hour or so persuading the stablehands to just let him be.
She whistles for him as soon as she's outside, looking forward to a pleasant ride. She hopes that the spirits will leave her alone to enjoy it for at least a few minutes now that she's on her way... |

Traveller's long hair is moist with the morning dew. He is as resplendent and fit as ever and in his short time here, he has built his own respectable reputation with the men. They respect strength and independence, after all. Traveller is known to possess both qualities in great supply.
Faylinn is left alone for some time, hearing the occasional 'wise choice, sorcerer' and 'come hither', but her trip progresses nicely and spirits are not on her case as they had been. They can tell she is resolved to make the journey now.
She eventually receives more explicit directions, 'North! Past the brook of dark waters, then into the den of the caterpillars. There is the forest temple you seek!'
Faylinn has already come across trickster spirits in Greymoor, and they do abound here, but this one is being truthful. Faylinn has the advantage of discerning the truth out of the things that rest in these lands. Besides, even the trickster continue to lie to her once they are found out, it is more of a game for them than anything else. _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

| Faylinn directs Traveller to the north. "Tell me, o spirits," she requests aloud, "about the den of caterpillars and the temple. I know I will be seeing them shortly, but there is no harm in telling me a little of it, is there?" |

'You will see a trail that the caterpillars follow. They have been making cocoons for weeks. You will see beyond the veil of white lights there is a single waterfall and cavern. There is the entrance to the temple you seek. Make your offering there. We demand it.'
The voice that delivers this message is watery and calm, transported this far from the waterfall by air spirits, as far as Faylinn can tell: a mist hanging around her and Traveller.
'The caterpillars are large but do not be frightened. It is not likely that they see you... They ignore most living things.' _________________ AmberCon Arizona Webpage

| Faylinn keeps an eye out for the trail as they continue to move. "What is it that the caterpillars are preparing for? Is it simply the time of year where they enter their cocoons and become something else? |
